2nd chance poem

Published June 8, 2012 by KalamityK

I just found a scrap of paper tucked into my bookcase with this poem written on it. It’s one of many scraps I’ve kept over the years. If I find anymore I’ll share them as well.

IF I HAD MY CHILD TO RAISE AGAIN

If I had my child to raise again,

I’d finger-paint more and point my finger less.

I’d do less correcting and more connecting.

I’d take my eyes off my watch and watch with my eyes.

I would care to know less and know to care more.

I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.

I’d stop playing serious and seriously play.

I’d run through more fields and gaze at more stars.

I’d do more hugging and less tugging.

I would be firm less often and affirm much more.

I’d build self-esteem first and the house later.

I’d teach less about the love of power and more about the power of love.

  • Isn’t it great? I would love the chance to go back and do all the things with the manchild that I meant to do but never got around to. Childhood is so fleeting! Ah well, maybe I’ll make a list and make sure I do ’em with the grandsprogs he’s gonna have in 10 years or so…. I’m far too young to be a grandma before then!
